The issue of underweight school children is being missed because of an "obsession" with tackling obesity, a group of researchers has claimed.

An Essex University study, presented at the European Congress on Obesity and involving 10,000 children aged nine to 16, found one in 17 was too thin.

Researcher Dr Gavin Sandercock said weighing too little was more damaging to health than weighing too much.

He warned that society was focused almost exclusively on obesity.

Aero-engine manufacturer Rolls-Royce is to sponsor a British project to drive a car beyond 1,000 miles per hour.

The company will provide financial as well as technical support.

The project will use a jet-engine to raise its speed to about 350mph before igniting a rocket motor to take it supersonic.

The intention is to break the current land speed record of 763mph (1,228km/h) next year, and then push it beyond 1,000mph (1,610km/h) in 2015.

Praying for close friends and romantic partners can affect behavior in positive ways, according to a study released this month.

The Christian Post reports a group of five studies shows that "colloquial, intercessory prayer focused on the partner changes observable behavior."

It found those who prayed for their friends or partners more easily forgave others, were less vengeful and had overall more cooperative behavior.

After several successful shows around the UK, the Brazilian dancer Jean Abreu is back with his brand-new show: Blood. Jean Abreu is part of the select group of Brazilian dancers who have achieved success outside their country. Based in London for 15 years, he studied at the Laban Dance Centre and started up his own company in 2003.

“Blood is inspired by the work of Gilbert and George. I was fortunate in meeting them at the Venice Biennale in 2005 and we remained good friends. I love their dance sculpture from 1981 but it was their series ‘The Fundamental Pictures’ that led me to want to explore spiritual, scientific and philosophical questions about the body”, explained Jean.

Google has unveiled new video game features coming to its Android operating system (OS).

They include the ability to synchronize a player's progress across different devices and the ability to compare scores on leaderboards managed via its Google+ social network.

The leaderboard feature will also be offered to gamers playing on Apple's iOS devices or using web-based titles.

Scientists have developed the first map of the world's most unique and most endangered mammals and amphibians.

The map highlights the fact that only a fraction of the areas identified as critical for the conservation of these species are protected.

Among the species highlighted by the map are the Mexican salamander, the Sunda pangolin and the black and white ruffed Lemur.

Retirement has a detrimental impact on mental and physical health, a new study has found.

The study, published by the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), a think tank, found that retirement results in a "drastic decline in health" in the medium and long term.

The IEA said the study suggests people should work for longer for health as well as economic reasons.

Angry Birds, the smartphone diversion beloved by adult and child gamers alike, is making the leap from mobile devices to the big screen.

Sony Pictures Entertainment says it will release a 3D, animated film version of the video game in 2016. Game maker Rovio is partnering with Sony to make the movie.

The Angry Birds video game, launched in 2009, is the top paid application of all time, with 1.7 billion downloads. It challenges players to use a slingshot to launch its angry birds at evil green pigs in order to retrieve the birds' eggs.

Danish museum officials say that an archaeological dig last year has revealed 365 items from the Viking era, including 60 rare coins.

Danish National Museum spokesman Jens Christian Moesgaard says the coins have a distinctive cross motif attributed to Norse King Harald Bluetooth, who is believed to have brought Christianity to Norway and Denmark.

Sixteen-year-old Michael Stokbro Larsen found the coins and other items with a metal detector in a field in northern Denmark.
